The Carnival in Basel
Basel, Switzerland
Abstract
The Carnival in Basel is an exciting and meaningful experience, dating back to 1376. This annual tradition is a large part of the local history and the city’s identity. These rich traditions have been recognized by UNESCO as an element of intangible culture. Switzerland’s largest carnival lasts for three days after Ash Wednesday. The beginning of the festival starts with an early morning procession which lasts through the evening. Participants wear colorful costumes and elaborate masks. Music and games are modernized, but still encompass the significance of the ancient traditions. It is a spectacular experience that locals call the “three best days” of the year.
